Brewing in Bremen: Introducing Sucafina Germany

Sucafina’s first full-fledged trading office in Germany opened its doors in Bremen this month. At the helm are Bastian Fülles and Tobias Schwind, who bring more than 30 years of combined experience and deep industry knowledge. We spoke to them about their vision for Sucafina Germany and what excites them most about this new chapter.

 1. What excites you most about launching Sucafina Germany?

BF: It’s the opportunity to help build Sucafina Germany from the ground up. Personally, I’m driven by the ambition to create something meaningful, drawing on my experience and deep passion for coffee. I’m confident that with strong teamwork and commitment, we can make a real impact and add lasting value to the Sucafina Group.

TS: Expanding Sucafina’s highly adaptable trading platform with a full-fledged trading office into the German market will complement the Group’s existing European structures and deliver a lot of value for clients. We’re genuinely excited to put this into action and to help build a local team which lives up to these standards.

 2. What advantages does Sucafina’s global network offer to German clients?

TS: Sucafina’s strong global network and supply chain reliability enables us to provide clients with valuable insights into market dynamics, both at origin and in destination markets. This will be key to helping our partners to navigate these volatile market conditions.

BF: With such broad expertise and services, we have a great opportunity to deliver comprehensive, customized solutions to the German coffee industry and unlock even more value together. Take Sucafina’s diverse range of origins: I’m particularly excited about exploring secondary and emerging milds from Africa and Asia as strong competitors to traditional sources. Then there’s Sucafina’s full value-chain coverage – from green coffee to roasted and instant products.

3. Why Bremen, and what makes it a good base for our new office?

BF: Oh, that’s a great question! 😄 Bremen has so much to offer: it’s home to a strong local economy with plenty of hidden champions who quietly get things done. I’m a born-and-bred Bremener, so those values really resonate with me.

TS: The fact that Bastian and I are both from Bremen and live here, is of course, purely coincidental! 😊 It’s also one of Europe’s coffee capitals and home to roasters, decaffeinators, traders, warehouse-keepers and more.

BF: Yes, Bremen is still at the heart of Germany’s coffee scene, rich with history, big names and many passionate local roasters. Plus, with its port and logistics network, it’s the perfect spot to connect Germany’s coffee tradition with Sucafina’s global reach.

4. How will you leverage Sucafina’s Farm to Roaster model to bring value to the German market?

BF: Transparency and traceability are becoming non-negotiable in the German coffee market, especially with rising compliance demands.

TS: And that’s why providing infrastructure for transparent and digital supply chains will be an important tool – not only to stay fully compliant with growing regulatory pressure, but also to give clients better data and insights into their supply chains, which can help them drive their sourcing decisions.

BF: We also need to highlight the amazing work happening at origin every day. By showcasing these efforts and connecting them to tangible commercial projects, we can offer unique, traceable coffees that strengthen partnerships and meet the growing demand from roasters for sustainable sourcing.

 5. What trends do you expect will shape the future of coffee in Germany?

BF: I expect further consolidation, with a few key multinational players shaping the German market. Increasing political regulations and compliance requirements will continue to challenge the industry, while flat consumption and price volatility are pushing brands to focus on cost optimization and export growth.

TS: The fact that consumers were less sensitive to coffee prices during the rally came as a surprise to many people – myself included. Once green coffee prices stay at relatively low levels for a while, roasters might be able to capture more value from consumers – especially younger people – by offering a wider range of innovative formats, such as flavored coffees. Just look at the hundreds of flavor profiles for energy drinks: there’s a lot of inspiration to draw from!
