Smithsonian Bird Friendly Certification
Roasters can have high quality coffees and protect the natural ecosystem too with the Smithsonian Bird Friendly certification (SMBC). SMBC coffees protect vital ecosystems and habitats for migratory birds and are certified Organic and shade grown.
SMBC farms protect forests, sequester carbon and help wildlife thrive. Three-quarters of the coffee grown globally is grown in conditions that negatively affect forest habitats for local wildlife. SMBC seeks to change that by protecting native forest habitats for wildlife. SMBC farmers maintain forest cover and grow coffee under tall tree canopies. Since SMBC coffees grow under shade, they receive the quality that comes from lower temperatures that cause cherry to ripen more slowly and concentrate sugars during maturation.
SMBC farmers receive a premium for the ecosystem services their coffee farming is providing. Collectively, SMBC farmers produce approximately 34 million pounds of coffee annually. We currently offer SMBC coffees from Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Peru.
Interested in purchasing and selling SMBC-certified coffees? Anyone can buy SMBC coffees but to market and sell coffees as SMBC-certified, roasters enter into a licensing agreement with Smithsonian that authorizes the use of the trademarked Bird Friendly name and logo on their products. Email them to request a licensing agreement or learn more about the process.
