Through its local entities, Sucafina buys from all growing regions across Tanzania. Our current projects include helping producers become RFA/UTZ certified, improving specialty Natural processing at washing stations in Southern Tanzania and increasing our direct buying. Read more.
The Challenge: Aging Rootstock
A key factor in the slowing production in the Southern Highlands is aging rootstock.
- Many producers lack the money to purchase seedlings.
- As trees age, their yields decrease and farmers can often get stuck in a feedback loop where their older rootstock produces lower yields, generating less income and making it more difficult to invest in renovating trees.
Our Approach: Seedling Nursery
Seedling nurseries run by our partner cooperatives, Ilomba and Ruanda, help farmers access affordable high-quality seedlings and learn new renovation techniques, which can reverse the trend of diminishing yields.
How to Get Involved
You can support approximately the 600 farmers in our network who need new seedlings. Each farmer will receive approximately 20 seedlings. A total of 12,000 high-quality seedlings are needed. Seedlings are planted in February and March.
It costs $280 to cultivate and distribute 200 seedlings to 10 farmers (20 seedlings per farmer).
Contributions can be added as price per lb/kg or in lump sums. Speak with your trader about the best way for you to contribute.
