The Challenge: Soil Infertility
- Many farms experience depleted soil and falling yields, leading to lower incomes.
- Traditional chemical fertilizers do not work well in Rwanda as most soils in coffee growing areas lack binding agents.
Our Approach: Fertilizers
Through partnerships with consultants and local governments, we created an organic fertilizer tailored to the specific needs of Rwandan soils.
- At Sucafina’s facility in Bushenyi, fly larvae transform mucilage and food waste into a nutrient-rich fertilizer.
- Fertilizer is distributed at cost to farmers within our network.
- The protein-packed larvae can also be processed into animal feed, increasing food security for local farming families.
How to Get Involved
It costs US$5 to produce and distribute a 25kg bag of fertilizer. Farmers need approximately 8 bags of this fertilizer for their land each year.
Contributions can be added as price per lb/kg or in lump sums. Speak with your trader about the best way for you to contribute.
