The Challenge: Lack of Connectivity

  • Around 50% of (approx. 25,000) farmers within our network are unable to access key services because they do not have phones.
  • Many farmers cannot access essential digital services that could inform their actions, including weather forecasts, agronomic advice and current prices at nearby washing stations.

Our Approach: Phones for Farmers

  • With inexpensive mobile phones, farmers can receive valuable information via SMS, such as:
    • Agricultural advice relating to their fields and crop care.
    • Cherry payment amounts at washing stations (including transaction confirmations).
    • Key information impacting their livelihoods (ranging from coffee growing practices to cherry prices.
  • Better phone access also helps farmers build a digital banking record, making them more bankable in the long term.

How to Get Involved

  • It costs US $15 to supply a farmer with 1 phone and SIM card.
