Uganda - Beyond Flagship: Tools for Prosperity Update

Smallholder farmers across Uganda typically manage very small plots, often around 300 trees. On farms this small, improving productivity is key to strengthening incomes. While several factors influence yields, access to basic farming tools remains a practical and immediate constraint, affecting soil management, pruning and overall farm maintenance.

Smallholder farmers across Uganda typically manage very small plots, often around 300 trees. On farms this small, improving productivity is key to strengthening incomes. While several factors influence yields, access to basic farming tools remains a practical and immediate constraint, affecting soil management, pruning and overall farm maintenance.

To address this, Ugacof (Sucafina in Uganda) has launched the Tools for Prosperity project as part of our IMPACT Beyond Flagship programming. By improving access to essential tools alongside practical training, the project contributes to stronger farm management, higher productivity and more resilient household incomes.

By purchasing select microlots from our vertically integrated supply chain in Uganda, roasters directly support this work, linking coffee purchases to practical, on-farm impact.

This article at a glance:

  • For 2025, our Tools for Prosperity project supports 100+ IMPACT-verified farmers supplying Katerera CWS
  • The project combines tool access with Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) training
  • Designed to improve yields, resilience and long-term income

Tools for Prosperity (part of our IMPACT Beyond Flagship project line-up) equips IMPACT-verified smallholder coffee farmers delivering to Katerera Coffee Washing Station (CWS) in Uganda with essential farming tools and practical support. By providing tool kits that include hoes, spades and pruning saws to smallholder farmers, the project focuses on a simple but effective lever: equipping farmers with the tools and training needed to improve day-to-day farm management, yields and income over time.

We reached out to Rebecca Niwabiine, Sustainability Coordinator, and Anička Marková, our East Africa Specialty Coordinator for insights into the project’s progress in 2025.

About the Project:

Farmers delivering to Katerera Coffee Washing Station (CWS) typically cultivate very small plots, sometimes with as few as 300 coffee trees. Many of these trees are aging, limiting productivity and making it difficult for households to generate sufficient income or reinvest in their farms.

Tools for Prosperity focuses on practical, targeted support. Each participating farmer receives a basic toolkit, including a hoe, spade and pruning saw, alongside hands-on training in how to use them effectively.

These simple inputs enable better soil management, more effective pruning and healthier plots overall, contributing to improved productivity over time. Toolkits are distributed ahead of the main cultivation period, ensuring farmers can apply these practices throughout the season.

By addressing immediate farm needs while strengthening day-to-day management, Tools for Prosperity helps build a more solid foundation for long-term productivity and income growth.

How it works:

1. Toolkit distribution. Each participating farmer (100+ in 2026) receives a tool kit that includes a hoe, spade and pruning saw, with an approximate total value of 15.24 USD per package.

Tool typePriceCurrency
Hoe15000UGX
Spade15000UGX
Pruning Saw25000UGX
Total55,000UGX
Total USD$15.24USD

2. Training. The project incorporates farmer training and capacity-building activities, providing practical guidance on how to use the equipment efficiently. To ensure maximum impact, the tool kits will be distributed in April, aligning with the pre-season and early cultivation period so farmers can fully utilize them throughout planting and maintenance cycles.

Plans for 2025:

For 2025, select microlots from our vertically integrated supply chain in Uganda include a built-in contribution to Tools for Prosperity.

As Marková confirms, the team is progressing key activities, including the continued purchase and distribution of toolkits for farmers supplying Katerera CWS. Looking ahead, farmer-facing materials will be developed to outline the project and show where their coffee is sold globally, strengthening transparency and connection across the supply chain.

For roasters and farmers alike, this creates a direct link between sourcing and impact, enabling investment in the supply chains that matter most.
