About This Coffee
Over 260 farmers across 12 villages in the Kianantu district of PNG’s Eastern Highlands work together in the Timuza Cooperative. Chairman Homson ‘Bumper’ Agefi has led the cooperative in making tangible improvements to their coffee by focusing on picking, processing, drying and storage. The cooperative has also attained their Organic certification. Many members have received quality training through a supporting organization.
Together, the cooperative has built raised drying beds, better storage huts and a central micro wet-mill. Their hard work has been paying off. In 2016 they took 1st place in the National Cupping Competition and have continued to produce high quality lots with exquisite new flavors each year.
Coffee in Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a relative newcomer to the specialty coffee scene. The remote locations of the nation’s smallholders—who produce 85% of total coffee in the country—combined with historically-poor infrastructure has made the transition to specialty difficult. Nonetheless, the country is working towards innovative solutions that will hopefully lead to better quality coffee and improved livelihoods for the nation’s smallholder coffee producers.
