Laying the Groundwork for IMPACT
Sucafina is laying the groundwork to make IMPACT, its responsible sourcing program, a global leader in environmentally and socially sustainable coffee production. One essential component is ensuring that we have measurable baseline data that can be shared with roasters.
We have developed in-house proprietary methodologies to collect data on carbon emissions, regenerative agriculture and living income (three of our five IMPACT goals) to create a baseline assessment.
“Collecting, validating and analyzing this data gives us a baseline assessment that enables us to tailor interventions to address real needs or challenges within our supply chains.,” says May Putman Cramer, Change Manager for Sustainability at Sucafina.
Our aim is to have baselines for 10 key origins by 2023. To reach this goal, we held training sessions with key origin managers and data leads in East Africa and Asia Pacific.
“From the training, I learned that quality data is key and quality data collection helps us plan for upcoming projects to support farmers,” says Winny Cheptoo, Farmer Trainer at Sucafina in Kenya (KENYACOF).
The key insights that we collate for the IMPACT goals will be compiled into a report that will be shared with purchasers of IMPACT coffees. Roasters will, for example, be able to see a simple calculation of the carbon footprint of the coffee they bought. They can then use these data-driven insights to report to their customers or for other purposes. With IMPACT Beyond, roasters can work with Sucafina to identify key improvement areas and develop projects or programs to, for instance, decrease the carbon footprint of that coffee or work towards a living income for farmers in their supply chain.
These in-depth reports for IMPACT-verified coffees will likely be available in 2024. You can support these efforts by purchasing IMPACT-verified coffees and asking your trader about IMPACT Beyond.
