About This Coffee

This Indonesian Robusta, sourced from smallholder farmers in Temanggung, Central Java, represents some of the finest robusta coffee in Indonesia. Grown in the fertile volcanic foothills of Mount Sumbing, Mount Sindoro, and Mount Ungaran, this coffee benefits from the region’s unique terroir and traditional farming practices. Known for its large bean size (ELB, equivalent to screen 18+), this Grade 2 coffee offers a sweet, rounded cup with notes of cedar, spices, and vanilla.

Cultivation

The coffee is grown on small farms ranging from 0.25 to 2 hectares, with typical yields of 0.5 to 1 ton per hectare. Farmers in Temanggung practice sustainable farming on volcanic soils, often under shade provided by diverse native flora. The primary variety is the Tugasari clone, along with several other local robusta strains. Female collectors sourced over 90% of this coffee directly from farmers, ensuring a fair and transparent supply chain.

Harvest & Post-Harvest

Harvested between June and September, the cherries are carefully handpicked to ensure quality. Unlike other regions in Indonesia that primarily use natural processing, Temanggung farmers employ a pulped natural method. The cherries are pulped and dried on farmers’ yards, which enhances the coffee's sweetness and fruity profile. Once dried, the coffee is sold to processors in Semarang or Surabaya for final milling, resulting in a high-quality robusta with balanced acidity, a full body, and a clean finish.

Coffee in Indonesia

Indonesia has a long coffee producing history, but recently their coffees have been overlooked by the specialty market. Thanks to our innovative and ever-expanding supply chain, we are proud to bring you high-quality coffees from many of Indonesia’s unique regions, accompanied by in-depth traceability information.

Indonesia is perhaps best known for its unique wet hulling process (giling basah). Though its exact origins are unclear, wet hulling most likely originated in Aceh during the late 1970s.

Wet hulling’s popularity can be attributed to producers’ need for prompt payments. It was also adopted specifically by many producers who lacked the drying infrastructure that was needed to shelter drying parchment from the high humidity and inconsistent rainfall typical in Sumatra. At higher elevations with constant humidity and unpredictable rainfall, drying can prove to be slow, risky and difficult.
