About This Coffee
Mexico is a significant player in the global coffee market, especially when it comes to organic and shade-grown Arabica. Coffee is cultivated in 15 states, but over 90% of production is concentrated in four: Chiapas, Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Puebla. The country's coffee is primarily grown by smallholders—95% of producers farm less than three hectares, and around 85% are Indigenous.
The country is one of the largest global producers of certified organic and Fair Trade coffee.
Robusta, makes up just 3–4% of national production. It's generally grown at low altitudes. Some small pockets of Robusta cultivation are in the lowlands of Veracruz, Chiapas and Oaxaca.
Coffee in Mexico
Mexico is one of the largest exporters of certified Organic and Fairtrade coffees. Smallholders with less than 10 hectares compose a full 70% of Mexico’s coffee producers. Since the 1990s, producers have largely been successful at forming cooperatives that sell certified coffees and help them gain market access to garner higher prices.
