Continuing Partnerships in PNG

In Papua New Guinea (PNG), Sucafina signed a partnership with Market Development Facility (MDF) that will enable Sucafina to expand its work supporting over 2,500 coffee farmers in Kainantu and Wau districts. The Australian Government-funded Market Development Facility (MDF) stimulates investment, business innovation and regulatory reform to create additional jobs and increase the income of poor citizens in rural and urban areas in the Indo-Pacific region. MDF has been working in PNG’s coffee market since 2018.

The Partnership will help Sucafina PNG provide agricultural extension to smallholders, establish demonstration plots and conduct carbon monitoring along the PNG coffee value chain. This will, in turn, translate into greater availability of certified and traceable coffee from the region. As part of Sucafina’s wider commitment to sustainability, the project aligns with two of Sucafina’s three key sustainability pillars: focusing on investing in farmers in the supply chain and protecting the planet.

Globally, Sucafina is a leading sustainable Farm to Roaster, Swiss-based coffee company and contributes to 14 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Sucafina PNG works directly with farmers and locally-owned exporters to source high-quality coffees from PNG. This partnership with MDF will enable Sucafina to continue supporting sustainable growth and traceable coffee supply chains across the world.

Another aspect of the partnership will focus on evaluating the carbon footprint of coffee production in PNG as well as examining the health of forest landscapes near producing areas. Customized data templates and a carbon calculator will lay the groundwork for measuring carbon emissions in the coffee sector, with the end goal to reduce carbon emissions over time. This calculator will be available for the locally-owned and operated exporters who work with Sucafina to calculate their own emissions.

We are excited to begin this work with support from MDF. Keep an eye out for future updates about this project.
