Uganda - Beyond Flagship: Tools for Prosperity

The Tools for Prosperity project equips IMPACT verified smallholder coffee farmers delivering to Katerera Coffee Washing Station (CWS) in Uganda with essential farming tools and practical support. By providing tool kits that include hoes, spades and pruning saws, this initiative tackles a key barrier to productivity – limited access to essential farm equipment.

By purchasing select microlots from our vertically integrated supply chain in Uganda, you are supporting a project that equips IMPACT verified smallholder coffee farmers in Uganda with essential farming tools and practical support. As part of our Beyond Flagship program line-up, this initiative supports farmers with the implements they need to execute improved farming practices, thus resulting in improved yeilds and income over time.

Introduction

The Tools for Prosperity project equips IMPACT verified smallholder coffee farmers delivering to Katerera Coffee Washing Station (CWS) in Uganda with essential farming tools and practical support. By providing tool kits that include hoes, spades and pruning saws, this initiative tackles a key barrier to productivity – limited access to essential farm equipment. The project supports IMPACT goals by contributing to wider yield-increasing initiatives and building capacity to improve farmer prosperity through access to tools, practical skills and improved management practices.

The Rationale

Farmers delivering to Katerera Coffee Washing Station (CWS) typically cultivate small plots with, sometimes, as few as 300 coffee trees, many of which are aging and increasingly unproductive. With such limited production, many households struggle to earn a living income. Many farmers across Uganda, in fact, lack access to basic farming tools necessary for effective coffee production and farm management. This scarcity hinders their ability to manage soil, prune trees and maintain healthy plots, contributing to lower productivity and constrained household income. Without improved access to tools and farm equipment, farmers are less able to adopt best practices that support yield improvements, resilience and long-term economic security.

By directly supplying tool kits to farmers along with the training in how to best apply Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), our Tools for Prosperity project supports immediate needs while laying the groundwork for stronger productivity outcomes and income growth.

Project Components

  • Tool Kit Distribution: Each participating farmer receives a tool kit consisting of a hoe, spade and pruning saw (total value ~ 15.24 USD per package).
  • Farmer Training & Capacity-Building: Distribution is paired with practical guidance on effective use of the tools and basic farm-management techniques.
  • Implementation Timing: Tool kits will be distributed during March – April to align with the pre-season and early cultivation activities, maximizing their utility across planting and maintenance cycles.

Expected Outcomes/Impact

  • Increased Productivity: Improved access to tools enables better soil preparation, coffee tree management and farm upkeep, contributing to higher yields long-term.
  • Improved Farmers’ Income: Enhanced productivity supports stronger harvests, increasing coffee sales potential and increasing potential impact on household income.
  • Sustainable Farming Practices: Practical training combined with tool access promotes adoption of improved farm management techniques that support longer-term sustainability.

Contribution & Investment

  • Starter Tool Kit (incl. hoe, spade & pruning saw) = around 15.24 USD (55,000 UGX)
  • With allocated funds, this project will distribute kits to farmers delivering to Katerera CWS, pairing material support with knowledge sharing to enhance outcomes.

About Beyond Flagship projects

Beyond Flagship Projects are initiatives linked to IMPACT-verified farmer groups within Sucafina’s direct supply chains. These projects are designed to offer partners a flexible way to support IMPACT goals, create measurable impact and drive meaningful change at contribution levels below the typical minimum threshold for full project sponsorship.

Investments are made through a premium and do not need to be tied directly to coffee produced by the project’s participating farmers. Instead, support is Origin-specific – for example, purchasing Beyond Flagship contributing coffees from Colombia enables investment in Colombia-based IMPACT Beyond projects. This approach increases flexibility, expands the potential for impact at scale and supports more consistent data collection and reporting across supply chains.
