About the Farmgate Initiative

Sucafina North America created the Farmgate Initiative to increase the price paid to farmers for their coffee.

Farmgate payments are typically one-off cash distributions to growers during harvest, leaving many farmers with little to rely on the rest of the year. Roasters often make coffee purchases with little visibility or input into what farmers get paid. Through the Farmgate Initiative, this cycle is disrupted.

Roasters are invited to add a payment to farmers directly in their sales contracts. We deliver those premiums as a second payment to the farmers involved in producing the coffee purchased. Wherever possible, this payment is made as a direct cash distribution to farms or farmers. In countries where the supply chain is not completely digitally connected (for instance Burundi), farmgate interventions are made to increase wealth for contributing farmers in other ways, such as in the form of livestock or solar power (implemented by the Kahawatu Foundation).

We offer the Farmgate option on coffees from our vertically integrated supply chains in Ethiopia, Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda and Papua New Guinea (PNG).
